Bill Maher: He’s the coauthor of the upcoming book ‘Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster‘ and a senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists’ Global Security Program, Dr. Edwin Lyman. Thank you for coming to enlighten us, I must say I wanted you here on our first show [back from the break] because I know this is your area of expertise. I keep reading about this in the paper, never on page 1 — way back in the paper. I just think if the world is going to get together and unite to invade some country that’s poisoning us, it shouldn’t be Syria. It should be Japan. Do you think Japan needs an intervention?

Dr. Edwin Lyman, Senior scientist with The Union of Concerned Scientists, doctorate in physics from Cornell U. and postdoctoral research associate at Princeton U.: Japan definitely is not handling the situation on its own. [...] The problem is that Japan had an idea about it’s nuclear industry that just wasn’t true. They thought that they had really mastered nuclear technology. And they had really fooled the rest of the world into thinking that. And then this happened [...]
Maher: I read that there are 300 tons of radioactive water leaking into the ocean every day. And this is two-and-half-years after the event occurred. This is what I think should be page 1 of the newspaper every day.[...]
Maher: In the years past, I’ve been on the fence about nuclear power. I’m not on the fence anymore. I’m like with Germany, as soon as this happened Germany went, ‘You know what? We’re out of this business.’ Because everybody says it’s safe, it’s so safe — except that any one accident, all it takes is one and then when it’s not safe, it’s super not safe. [...]
