The #EVrEVolution continues as the 50,000 th LEAF is delivered to TX Family with Free Charging!

"In Texas Nissan & eVgo currently offer a two year “No charge to charge” promotion, which no doubt has helped spur EV sales there, however, that deal still does not match Tesla’s offer of Free EV charging for Life for their new electric cars." - EV.com

Nissan LEAF Leaps Ahead Again - EV.com

Nissan LEAF #50,000 in USA
Nissan delivers 50,000 of their popular electric cars (the LEAF) in the USA and has delivered more than twice that many globally (115,000).
Back in (April 2010) I said that “This EV really could eventually become known as the “LEAP” (instead of LEAF) because its introduction helps Nissan “leap” ahead of their
competitors by completely bypassing the production of a generation of hybrid (electric and petroleum propelled) cars/vehicles, such as Toyota’s popular Prius. This electric car clearly puts Nissan in the lead of helping the transportation industry transition from traditional gasoline-powered vehicles to those operating in a more environmentally responsible manner by using clean, green sustainable energy.”

Nissan delivers 50,000th all-electric LEAF in U.S. to Texas family - Nissan Newsroom

Previous Nissan LEAF sales Milestones include: Reaching 50,000 units in global sales back in
February 2013, at the time the Nissan LEAF was only available in 17 European countries, but that was enough to earn it the title of the world’s best selling highway-capable all-electric car ever and according to Nissan Press releases the “Nissan LEAF is the world’s top-selling electric vehicle.”.
About the LEAF:
The LEAF is Nissan’s zero emission pure electric vehicle (EV) and was just the first of many steps in Nissan’s massive commitment to sustainable mobility and helps clarify their belief that electric cars are the ultimate solution to that goal.
The Nissan LEAF EV is historically significant because it was the first pure electric car to be produced and distributed by a top ten auto manufacturer. The LEAF was first unveiled in August of 2009 and might become the ultimate green purchase for green-minded financially savvy car shoppers for many years to come.
The price for Nissan’s environmentally friendly EV in the USA is can be as low as $21,480 after Federal rebates. This price point is a “big deal” and a potential “game changer” not only because that will make the Nissan LEAF less expensive than the Toyota Prius, but also the same price as many petroleum-powered cars. For many potential new car buyers this could make an EV purchase for the first time in automotive industry history a proverbial “no-brainer” due to an EV’s inherent lower fuel, maintenance and general operating costs than any other previous and current offerings from the major auto manufacturers.
It is now possible to lease a new Nissan LEAF for less per month that many people currently pay for filling up their old gas guzzler each month!

The Nissan Leaf 24 kWh battery pack is powered by lithium-ion batteries, with a power output of over 90kw, which in turn powers an 80kw electric motor, that is used for propulsion. The lithium-ion batteries have the capability to recharge 80% of their capacity in less than thirty minutes and can carry up to five passengers up to approximately 109 miles (175 km) on a single charge (as tested via the New European Driving Cycle). That allows approximately 100 miles of travel when charged at home to cost less than $2.75 (based on $0.11/kWh) or even less if charging at off-peak rates, which is offered by many local electric utilities.
Nissan LEAF #50,000 sold in Texas
Additional interest to the eco-friendly crowd Nissan has designed the LEAF (including the batteries) to be almost fully recyclable and thus environmentally sustainable. Nissan should be applauded for their amazing accomplishment and for being the first of the top ten auto manufacturers to deliver a mass-produced zero-emission vehicle to world markets.
In 2014 the Nissan LEAF became the most environmentally friendly car sold in the USA when compared to 1,300 other vehicles according to the Automotive Science Group (ASG) 2014 Automotive Performance Index. The Nissan LEAF has won many awards since being introduced: 2010 Green Car Vision Award, the 2011 European Car of the Year, the 2011 World Car of the Year, and the 2011–2012 Car of the Year Japan and EV.com’s 2010 EV of the Year Award, just to name a few.

This is real progress to the connection between Battery Tech and Renewables especially in Off Grid/Grid Down Applications.

Nissan has had the Home Charger System available in Japan for some time.

Although the Japanese home uses MUCH less power than the average American Home.

We are getting closer.

Honda Opens Demonstration Smart Home, With Fit EV Electric Car In Garage

Most of us think "Honda" and bring up economy cars, perhaps lawnmowers, or even portable generators. Complete houses aren't usually on the list.
Yesterday, though, the Japanese carmaker opened its Honda Smart Home US in Davis, California--demonstrating its ideas for how Americans might live a zero-carbon life in the 21st Century.
California often pushes the envelope in new technology, and with its corporate home in the Orange County city of Torrance, Honda opted to site its low-impact living testbed on the campus of the University of California at Davis

Davis is flat, sunny, and laced with bike paths, and it's just outside the state capital of Sacramento, about 80 miles east of San Francisco.

Green vehicles parked across from Honda Smart Home at UC-Davis, California
Green vehicles parked across from Honda Smart Home at UC-Davis, California
UC-Davis has long had an emerging West Campus residential community, including space and support staff for these kinds of experiments in living.
Low-impact homes are a topic of discussion around the world, with considerable interest in places like Australia and California, where sun power is plentiful but water can be scarce.
The Honda Smart Home represents about 2,000 square feet, all of it optimized toward energy-efficient living. It's fitted with LED lighting, radiant heating and cooling, a massive geothermal recovery system, a large solar photovoltaic panel system, and even a grey-water filtering and recovery system.
The home is actually designed to be energy positive, contributing electricity to the grid and even including a battery storage system both to capture excess energy and to provide a backup in case of blackouts or peak power demands.

Backyard stormwater runoff channel at Honda Smart Home at UC-Davis, California
After a period as an open house, the home will be used for three years by UC-Davis visiting faculty and staff, with each tenant staying for a year.
Because this home is an ongoing experiment, tenants will have their power usage monitored--and also be expected to give feedback on the operation and livability of the home as part of regular interviews.
Since this is a Honda Home, the use of a zero-emission Honda Fit EV electric car is included with the home for the next three years.
The garage may be the most interesting and exciting area of what is actually a fairly small and modest home. It contains both a standard 240-Volt Level 2 charging station and, more unusually, an actual DC charging outlet as well.
Honda Fit EV electric car in garage of Honda Smart Home at UC-Davis, California
Honda Fit EV electric car in garage of Honda Smart Home at UC-Davis, California
The solar photovoltaic system charges a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery system, housed in a garage storage area, and the solar panels can also directly charge the Fit EV via that DC cable.
For reference, that battery storage is about 40 percent the size of the Fit EV's own battery pack--but home storage is one of the uses envisioned down the road for used battery packs from electric cars, after the batteries' useful life in cars has ended.
Yesterday's event appeared to be a big deal for executives from Honda, judging by the cars parked outside: not only the low-volume Honda Fit EV, but also a 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid, and even a Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.
The Honda Smart Home does not, however, have its own hydrogen filling station. For that, unlike the Fit EV electric car, residents would have to go elsewhere.

Those in the market for a new car may want to give Nissan’s fully electric-powered vehicle, the Leaf, another look after the company’s latest announcement. The company said that its Japanese customers will now start receiving Leaf-based EV Power Stations with the capability of powering a home for a couple of days — that’s on top of its ability to keep your car charged for travel of up to 100 miles.
The new EV Power Station can supply 6kWh of energy to a home, which should keep it running for about two days, depending on usage. The new Power Station also features the ability to charge your Leaf vehicle faster, hitting an 80 percent full charge in four hours. That’s about half the time it takes to charge the car using one of the current Power Stations.
The new Power Station costs about 480,000 yen ($6,000) on top of the cost of the vehicle ($35,000). That may seem like a lot, but if your home is routinely knocked off the power grid, having a backup generator might be a nice convenience. (And if it was solar-powered, Zombie apocalypse survivalist types could justify the extra cost.) No word on when these new Power Stations will be available in the U.S.
Check out the video from Nissan below for more details.

Big announcement from Tesla Motors' Elon Musk on the upcoming roll out of the Model E Sedan:

By 2017 Elon Musk has promised that Tesla Motors will roll out an electric sedan with a 200-mile range and a price of around $35,000. Designed to compete with the BMW 3-series and Mercedes C-Class, a recent trademark application for the name “Model E” may indicate the name of this new, mass-market sedan. - Gas2.org

Elon Musk says mass market Tesla car (Model E) will have a ~48kWh battery, be 80% the size of the Model S

There is a lot of interesting info from a talk that Elon Musk gave at the CPUC last week. Of particular note, Musk gave some spec estimates for the mass market “Model E” vehicle expected to be released in 2017 with batteries coming from the Gigafactory. In the video above he says the car will have a 200 mile range and be 20% smaller than the Model S. Therefore the battery will need to have about 80% of the energy of the current Model S (Musk’s words). To be clear, since Tesla uses the constant sized 18650 cells (and looks to continue to do so) physical size and Watt-hours are fairly constant.
So given that a 60kWh Model S has a range of around 200 miles (EPA 208), that means that the Model E would need to have a battery around 80% the size of the Model S or 48kWh.
That’s still about double what leading ‘mass market’ electric cars have today. The Chevy Spark EV, with a range of 82 miles has a 21.3 kWh battery. The Nissan LEAF which has a 75 mile EPA range rating has a 24 kWh battery. The Chevy Volt has a 16kWh battery while the BMW i3 is 18.8.

Tesla cancelled its $49,000 40kWh battery Model S before it got an EPA estimate but most guesses were that it would get around 150 miles.  Add another 8kWh to the battery and take off 20% of the overall car size and 200 mile range seems doable.
Musk also mentions that besides the 20% drop in price, he expects economies of scale and other innovations to drop the price another 30% on the battery alone helping to get the Model E to around 50% the cost of the Model S at $35,000.

Tesla Superchargers represent the most advanced charging technology in the world, capable of charging Model S 16x faster than most public charging stations. We will soon roll out 120 kW Superchargers, which are 33% faster than our current version and can replenish half a charge in as little as 20 minutes, for free. It works by delivering DC power directly to the battery using special cables that bypass onboard charging equipment.
Select stations utilize canopies covered with solar panels to offset energy use and provide shade. Over the next few years, we plan to cover more stations in sunny locales with solar canopies as part of our commitment to the environment.(Tesla Motors)

e-NV200 to be tested in Tokyo – again

by Ernie Hernandez (LEAFguy) on July 14, 2013
evNV200
Nissan e-NV200

Testing will provide additional feedback for 2014 launch

We have been writing about the e-NV200 for so long the latest announcement by Nissan of its test with DHL Japan is almost a non-event.
The e-NV200 will be Nissan’s second global electric vehicle (EV) with its commercial launch next year. The e-NV200 uses the LEAF drivetrain, although the chassis is unique to the van. The gasoline version of the NV-200 has already launched in the US. The first time that we wrote a significant story about the e-NV200 was two years ago in July of 2011 (found here). That was also a Japan based test, in that instance with the Japanese postal service. Since then Nissan has worked with several companies globally including British Gas, AEON Retail and Saitama City. This real world feedback is crucial to provide useful information in tailoring the vehicle to meet the needs of the commercial market. Other e-NV200 articles can be found by putting e-NV200 in the search box on the right.
A careful reading of the paragraph above will note that Nissan is now proclaiming this a commercial launch in 2014. We read that to mean that this vehicle will not be available to retail customers, but we will need to investigate this further as this was just announced in Japan on Friday. With one of the largest expenses to fleet operations being fuel, we see the move to EVs as being a potentially sound business decision. Many delivery route type companies have a consistent, predictable driving range that could easily be accommodated by an electric van.

Big news: #DCFC (DC Fast Charger) Coming To MADTOWN - Local Mfg!!!

Electric vehicle Fast charging is coming to Madison. This summer, MGE will install a DC Quick Charger at Kelley's Market at 3859 E. Washington Ave.

Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV drivers will be able to charge their vehicles in 30 minutes or less (up to 80% battery capacity). Currently, it takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to charge a LEAF on a Level 2 (240 volt) charging system.

Other electric vehicles can still use the 26 MGE Level 1 and Level 2 public charging stations located throughout Dane County. At MGE, we install new energy technologies that can serve us today and provide alternatives for our energy future.

The DC Quick Charger is manufactured by ABB in New Berlin, Wis.

    • Nissan Announces Huge Price Reduction for 2013 Leaf

    by  • January 16, 2013 • Vehicles • 0 Comments
    2013 Nissan Leaf electric car

Last week, Nissan issued a press release announcing the improvements it had in store for its 2013 Leaf EV. Among those improvements were an additional, less expensive trim level, an extended range, and a better charging time. Though the Japanese company did not include pricing details simultaneously, many inferred that a price reduction would be in order because the Leaf and its battery are now being manufactured stateside in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Today, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Nissan announced pricing for the 2013 Leaf.  In doing so, they confirmed that there would indeed be a price reduction for the next model year.  The Japanese automaker is also claiming that the price reduction will make the 2013 Leaf the least expensive five-seater EV available to North American consumers.
According to yet another extremely long press release from Nissan, the 2013 Leaf will be available beginning at an MSRP of $6,400 less than the starting MSRP of the 2012 Leaf.  Further, all three trim levels of the 2013 Leaf will have MSRPs lower than the cheapest 2012 Leaf.  The 2012 Leaf currently has a starting price of $35,200 before any applicable federal or state tax credits, whereas the highest trim level of the 2013 Leaf—the SL—will have an MSRP of $34,840.  The mid-level trim—the SV—will be priced at $31,820, while the base trim—the S—will start at $28,800.
After the $7,500 federal tax credit Leaf owners qualify for, the price of the 2013 Leaf EV will fall to $21,300. Further, if you qualify for California’s state tax credit of $2,500—you’re looking at only $18,800 for a 2013 Leaf S.  Keep in mind, however, a destination fee of $850 dollars is not included in any of the above prices, nor are any tax, title, and license fees.  You can read the press release in its entirety here.

If One Storm Can Turn D.C. Dark For Several Days, What Would A Massive EMP Burst Do?

The “super derecho” storm that pounded the Washington D.C. area on Friday night with hurricane-force winds is being called unprecedented.  But the truth is that there are other events that could happen that would be far more damaging to our power grid.  For example, a substantial EMP burst over a major U.S. city would fry virtually all of the electronics in the city and take the power grid in the area down indefinitely.  A gigantic EMP burst over the entire country (caused by a massive solar storm or a very large nuclear explosion high in the atmosphere) could theoretically take down the entire national power grid.

2013 Nissan LEAF Gets Massive Price Cut (-$6,400)

© Nissan

New Entry-Level Model Almost 20% Cheaper than 2012 Model

This was not unexpected. In fact, a few months ago I wrote about Nissan's intention to create a new, improved and less expensive entry-level model of the electric LEAF. But it's still a welcome development: The 2013 Nissan LEAF electric car will now come in a new entry-level trim with an MSRP of just $28,800, which, after federal and state tax credits (depending on where you are), can mean you actually pay around $19,000. This compares very favorably with the MSRP of the 2012 base LEAF, which was $35,200, but this isn't exactly apples to apples since this more spartan trim didn't exist previously.According to Nissan, this price drop makes the LEAF the least expensive 5-seat electric car in the US.

2013 Nissan LEAF Trim Levels

The 2013 LEAF will now be available in three different trims:
  • LEAF S for $28,800.
  • LEAF SV for $31,820.
  • LEAF SL for $34,840.
It's interesting to note that even the most expensive trim for 2013 is still cheaper than the least expensive 2012 trim, which was $35,200. Now that's a price cut that makes a difference!
Here's how Nissan describes the different trims:
The 2013 Nissan LEAF is offered in three well-equipped models, the LEAF S, LEAF SV and LEAF SL. Standard features include 6-way manual driver's seat, 4-way manual front passenger's seat, trip computer (instant and average energy consumption, driving time, outside temperature and autonomy range), Automatic Temperature Control (ATC), center console storage and 3.6 kW onboard charger. The 2013 LEAF will be made in Nissan plant in Smyrna, Tenn. Powertrain output is 107 horsepower, with 187 lb-ft of torque, and energy is supplied by a 48-module lithium-ion battery that is also made in Smyrna. Because of aerodynamics improvements, the 2013 LEAF should have a longer driving range than the previous version, though the official EPA numbers aren't out yet. The Japanese version claimed a 14% improvement, but the US testing cycle is different.
