10/17/2014 — #EARTHQUAKE STRIKES NEAR DORMANT PISGAH VOLCANIC CRATER EAST OF LOS ANGELES, CA

Pisgah crater, a dormant volcanic cone located East of Los Angeles California near the Nevada border along Death Valley, just experienced some seismotectonic stress.

We’ve seen various activity , from minor earthquakes to major swarms , occur at this volcanic crater.

A lahar mud flow occurred from the Southeast flank of Mt. Shasta in Northern California.

Earthquake update Sept 20 2014

Volcanic and seismic activity are currently on the rise. Multiple 4.0M+ earthquakes across the North American craton, additional earthquake swarm activity occurring at the Oklahoma and Texas fracking operations.

Dormant volcanoes and magma chambers being displaced in North America as well…. near Salton Sea (south california), Mount Saint Helens, also in North Nevada, and at the Arizona / New Mexico border.

Central America needs to be on watch. Vancouver British Columbia , as well as Southern California near Salton Sea… all need to be ready for larger movement in the near term. The vast area being displaced across North America means we should see some noteworthy compensation movement along the edges of the plate boundaries.

West Pacific, be on watch near Japan, and New Zealand. Possibly also include far Western Indonesia as a place to be on guard for large movement.

Europe. Watch North Italy , and the English Channel into South UK.

South America. Watch the area NW of Chile / Peru experiencing the current swarm.

We have been covering the current #Ebola Outbreak (now being called an #Epidemic) since March of this year. Through our Digital Media partner, USA Emergency Broadcasting, we have been stressing the importance of Preparedness and Preparation for Biological Threats and Pandemics.

Well, now the Govt is GETTING SERIOUS about the fight against the 'Exponential Growth' of the Ebola Epidemic in West Africa.

As we discussed on Situational Preparedness on Monday of this week, we warned that the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE, needed in the case of an Ebola infection), will soon be in short supply.

The CDC just updated their Detailed Hospital Preparedness Protocols for Ebola.

Enterovirus D-68 is spreading and the "regular" Flu Season is on its way in the United States.

Recent admissions from several agencies that are rushing to procure these items for their own use.  So, if you haven't gotten a stockpile of N95 MedMasks (or the better N99/N100), Goggles, Quarantine Room preps, you might be a little late.

The Mathematics of Ebola Trigger Stark Warnings: Act Now or Regret It

The Ebola epidemic in Africa has continued to expand since I last wrote about it, and as of a week ago, has accounted for more than 4,200 cases and 2,200 deaths in five countries: Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone. That is extraordinary: Since the virus was discovered, no Ebola outbreak’s toll has risen above several hundred cases. This now truly is a type of epidemic that the world has never seen before. In light of that, several articles were published recently that are very worth reading.
The most arresting is a piece published last week in the journal Eurosurveillance, which is the peer-reviewed publication of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (the EU’s Stockholm-based version of the US CDC). The piece is an attempt to assess mathematically how the epidemic is growing, by using case reports to determine the “reproductive number.” (Note for non-epidemiology geeks: The basic reproductive number — usually shorted to R0 or “R-nought” — expresses how many cases of disease are likely to be caused by any one infected person. An R0 of less than 1 means an outbreak will die out; an R0 of more than 1 means an outbreak can be expected to increase. If you saw the movie Contagion, this is what Kate Winslet stood up and wrote on a whiteboard early in the film.)

The Eurosurveillance paper, by two researchers from the University of Tokyo and Arizona State University, attempts to derive what the reproductive rate has been in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. (Note for actual epidemiology geeks: The calculation is for the effective reproductive number, pegged to a point in time, hence actually Rt.) They come up with an R of at least 1, and in some cases 2; that is, at certain points, sick persons have caused disease in two others.

You can see how that could quickly get out of hand, and in fact, that is what the researchers predict. Here is their stop-you-in-your-tracks assessment:

In a worst-case hypothetical scenario, should the outbreak continue with recent trends, the case burden could gain an additional 77,181 to 277,124 cases by the end of 2014.

That is a jaw-dropping number.

What should we do with information like this? At the end of last week, two public health experts published warnings that we need to act urgently in response.

First, Dr. Richard E. Besser: He is now the chief health editor of ABC News, but earlier was acting director of the US CDC, including during the 2009-10 pandemic of H1N1 flu; so, someone who understands what it takes to stand up a public-health response to an epidemic. In his piece in the Washington Post, “The world yawns as Ebola takes hold in West Africa,” he says bluntly: “I don’t think the world is getting the message.”

He goes on:

The level of response to the Ebola outbreak is totally inadequate. At the CDC, we learned that a military-style response during a major health crisis saves lives…

We need to establish large field hospitals staffed by Americans to treat the sick. We need to implement infection-control practices to save the lives of health-care providers. We need to staff burial teams to curb disease transmission at funerals. We need to implement systems to detect new flare-ups that can be quickly extinguished. A few thousand U.S. troops could provide the support that is so desperately needed.

Aid ought to be provided on humanitarian grounds alone, he argues — but if that isn’t adequate rationale, he adds that aid offered now could protect us in the West from the non-medical effects of Ebola’s continuing to spread: “Epidemics destabilize governments, and many governments in West Africa have a very short history of stability. U.S. aid would improve global security.”

Should we really be concerned about the global effect of this Ebola epidemic? In the New York Times, Dr. Michael T. Osterholm of the University of Minnesota* — an epidemiologist and federal advisor famous for inadvertently predicting the 2001 anthrax attacks — says yes, we should. In “What We’re Afraid to Say About Ebola,” he warns: “The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has the potential to alter history as much as any plague has ever done.”

Geoeffective Sunspot 2158 produced a strong solar flare this afternoon measuring X1.6 at 17:45 UTC. The event event was associated with a Type II Radio emission with an estimated velocity of 3750 km/s. This is indicative of a strong coronal mass ejection, however updated coronagraph imagery is ultimately required to determine this.

The recent uptick in Volcanism and Earthquakes over the past couple of weeks has us concerned about the stability of the Yellowstone #Supervolcano Caldera Complex.

The M5.9 #Quake in Mexico has affected the Magma Pool in the Park.

Also this week, new information released via Tom Lupshu explaining the close proximity of the pool to the surface explaining recent seismic activity (unconfirmed).

Meanwhile, reports of the #TinFoilHat brigade making #Yellowstone "Go Viral" continue:

But their purveyors have never had social media before, and this time their prediction—at least of something significant, if not of a supervolcano eruption—almost came true. At dawn on March 30th, Yellowstone had a 4.8-magnitude earthquake, its biggest in thirty-four years.

Ebola patient escapes quarantine centre in search of food

A man suspected of suffering from Ebola has been filmed trying to run away from doctors in protective clothing, before he is bundled into a truck and driven away

 

A suspected Ebola patient caused panic in a market in Liberia’s capital when he left a clinic to find food.The man was caught by four medical personnel wearing yellow protective suits and bundled into a vehicle. Video footage, which has not been independently verified, shows a frightened crowd gathered near the scene in the capital, Monrovia.

Yellowstone Update: @USGS issues Statement on recent SuperVolcano predictions, #quakes, Uplift, and Helium | USGS/seis.utah

#YellowstoneSupervolcano Update 13.08.2014:

Well, not to add to the Internet Alternative Media hype re: The Predictions of a Yellowstone Supervolcano Eruption, the USGS issued a statement late on a Friday.

We at MP have been following the misinformation and rumors about the activity: uplift, quakes, geothermals, Helium-4 release, etc. for many months and are not predicting an eruption.

The "Nothing to see Here" approach by the USGS is unsettling at best.

Iceland's Bardarbunga Volcano begins as a "Fissure Eruption" - Red Alert Over Iceland - No Fly Zone declared

The eruption started in Holuhraun, north of Dyngjujökull, which is located in northern Vatnajökull,
just after midnight Friday, local time.

As reported on MP earlier this week, there have been some strong earthquakes associated with another point in the Bardarbunga complex which may explain a smaller initial eruption, being labeled as #Fissure eruptions:

The Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed its two first cases of Ebola this year, but claimed they were unrelated to the epidemic raging in four countries of West Africa.

Congolese health minister Felix Kabange Numbi said that two of eight samples taken from victims of a mystery fever had tested positive for Ebola.

"The results are positive. The Ebola virus is confirmed in DRC," Mr Kabange told AFP.

Speaking later on public television, he said the confirmation marked the seventh outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo, where the virus was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River.

But he said the two new cases had "no link to [the epidemic] raging in West Africa" and were different strains from one another.

Authorities immediately imposed a quarantine around the affected area in Equateur province near Jera, more than 750 miles northeast of the Congolese capital Kinshasa.

Medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres said it was sending a crew to help handle patients in the area.

The UN's World Health Organization (WHO) meanwhile announced that one of its health experts, an epidemiologist, had been infected while working in Sierra Leone.
