Iceland's Meteorological Office says a small lava eruption has begun underneath a glacier at the #Bardarbunga volcano, prompting the country to close the airspace over the volcano, the Associated Press reports. Seismic data showed ice melting beneath the Vatnajokull glacier, but it remains unclear if or when the eruption would break through the ice, sending ash and steam into the air. The data gives the depth and magnitude of each earthquake as well as the GPS coordinates. “This makes it easy to work with the data,” Bæring said. His 3D graph shows the activity hour by hour and can be rotated to show the activity from different angles.  The earthquakes have been continuing since the weekend and show no signs of letting up but there is also no sign of an eruption yet. Report: Armed men attack Liberia Ebola clinic, freeing patients

MONROVIA, Liberia - Liberian officials fear Ebola could soon spread through the capital's largest slum after residents raided a quarantine center for suspected patients and took items including bloody sheets and mattresses.

The violence in the West Point slum occurred late Saturday and was led by residents angry that patients were brought to the holding center from other parts of Monrovia, Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant health minister, said Sunday.

Local witnesses told Agence France Presse that there were armed men among the group that attacked the clinic.

"They broke down the doors and looted the place. The patients all fled," said Rebecca Wesseh, who witnessed the attack and whose report was confirmed by residents and the head of Health Workers Association of Liberian, George Williams.

Up to 30 patients were staying at the center and many of them fled at the time of the raid, said Nyenswah. Once they are located they will be transferred to the Ebola center at Monrovia's largest hospital, he said.

The attack comes just one day after a report of a crowd of several hundred local residents, chanting, 'No Ebola in West Point,' drove away a burial team and their police escort that had come to collect the bodies of suspected Ebola victims in a slum in the capital, Reuters reports.

West Point residents went on a "looting spree," stealing items from the clinic that were likely infected, said a senior police official, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press. The residents took medical equipment and mattresses and sheets that had bloodstains, he said. Ebola is spread through bodily fluids including blood, vomit, feces and sweat.

"All between the houses you could see people fleeing with items looted from the patients," the official said, adding that he now feared "the whole of West Point will be infected."

Some of the looted items were visibly stained with blood, vomit and excrement, said Richard Kieh, who lives in the area.

The incident creates a new challenge for Liberian health officials who were already struggling to contain the outbreak.

WHO: Ebola Crisis death toll "Vastly Underestimated"

(CNN) -- The magnitude of the Ebola crisis in West Africa is "vastly" underestimated, the World Health Organization said this week, as the death toll rose to more than 1,000.

Ebola has infected at least 1,975 people in Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Of those, at least 1,069 have died, according to the #WHO. It said the number reflects the count as of Monday.

"The outbreak is expected to continue for some time," the WHO said in a statement Thursday. "Staff at the outbreak sites see evidence that the numbers of reported cases and deaths vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak."

We at MP have been following the misinformation and rumors about the activity: uplift, quakes, geothermals, Helium-4 release, etc. for many months and are not predicting an eruption.

The "Nothing to see Here" approach by the USGS is unsettling at best.

"Though we love doing research at YVO, we prefer it when the research is on topics geological rather than the origin of false rumors. Nevertheless, we have received enough concerned emails and phone calls that we've spent some time tracking down a few of the statements made on various "alternative Internet news sources." 

1) First, everyone should know that geological activity, including earthquakes and ground uplift/subsidence is well within historical norms and seismicity is actually a bit low at present. 

2) Concern over road closures is much overblown. There's been one road closure of a small side road – just over three miles long – that was closed for two days. As one can imagine, it is not easy to maintain roads that pass over thermal areas where ground temperatures can approach those of boiling water. Roads at Yellowstone often need repair because of damage by thermal features as well as extreme cold winter conditions. 

3) The park has not been evacuated. This one is pretty easy to verify by everyone. If the Old Faithful webcam shows people, or if news articles are coming out about a hobbyist's remote control helicopter crashing into a hot spring, Yellowstone is certainly open for business. 

4) No volcanologists have stated that Yellowstone is likely to erupt this week, this month or this year. In one recent article, a name was attributed to a "senior volcanologist", but that person does not appear to exist, and a geologist with that name assures us that he did not supply any quotes regarding Yellowstone. 

5) Finally, we note that those who've kept track of Yellowstone over the past decade or so, have seen a constant stream of "predictions" regarding imminent eruptions at Yellowstone. Many have had specific dates in mind, none had a scientific basis, and none have come true." - Statement, USGS

There is always a possibility that Ebola Virus can come over and begin infect people in the US, However that chance is extremely low. The United States is an industrial nation and being so, we have a high quality sanitation program. This fact alone, helps prevents the spread of the Ebola Virus. Another major factor that will help control this virus is the fact that our hospital care system is the best in the world. We have positive air pressure isolation wards / rooms, we dispose of our dead with sanitation in mind and most health care is completed in a hospital, unlike in Africa where most of their health care is conducted in the home or village.

The Ebola Virus IS NOT AIRBORNE! The disease is transmitted by bodily fluids only! This means blood, saliva, tears, spittle, and human waste. In America, we only come into contact with another person’s bodily fluids if we choose to do so! This in effect will decrease the spread of the Ebola virus by itself.

About Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever

Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is one of numerous Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers. It is a severe, often fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (such as monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees).

Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola virus though 8-10 days is most common. Some who become sick with Ebola HF are able to recover, while others do not. 
The reasons behind this are not yet fully understood. However, it is known that patients who die usually have not developed a significant immune response to the virus at the time of death. - WHO

Ebola HF is caused by infection with a virus of the family Filoviridae, genus Ebolavirus. When infection occurs, symptoms usually begin abruptly. The first Ebolavirus species was discovered in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo near the Ebola River. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically.

Here’s a graphic of the cumulative number of cases by country (not counting Nigeria) and the total so far. These are all cases (confirmed, probable, suspected). You will notice that Sierra Leone is contributing the largest number of cases, but Liberia is contributing the strongest uptick in what seems to be an increase in rate of new cases. scienceblogs.com

MERS Outbreak Update:Suspected cases of MERS confirmed in Hong Kong/Virus May be Airborne

We have been following the developing spread of the #MERSOutbreak here and have noticed an increase in the con-tractability of the Virus and its spread.

USA Emergency Broadcasting originally posted the report out of Hong Kong of 3 suspected cases of the MERS Co-V (coronavirus).

The virus was also discovered in the air in a Camel Barn in Saudi Arabia last week...

But does that mean MERS is easily transmitted through the air?

"What they say is that virus particles can be airborne, but it's premature to conclude that MERS is transmitted through aerosols," said Dr. Mark Denison, a professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.

Doctor who died in Nigeria was an American flying back to U.S.

(CNN) - Patrick Sawyer had one stop to make before heading home to Minnesota to celebrate his daughters' birthdays: a conference in Lagos, Nigeria.

But when he landed in Lagos, Sawyer, 40, collapsed getting off the plane. He had been infected with Ebola in Liberia, where he worked as a top government official in the Liberian Ministry of Finance.

Sawyer was isolated at a local Nigerian hospital on July 20. He died five days later.
