Breaking: Bardarbunga Volcano in Iceland Erupts, Red Alert issued - New Eruption Papua, New Guinea | BBC/AccuWeather/dnai

Seismic Alert 29.08.2014:

Iceland's Bardarbunga Volcano begins as a "Fissure Eruption" - Red Alert Over Iceland - No Fly Zone declared

The eruption started in Holuhraun, north of Dyngjujökull, which is located in northern Vatnajökull,
just after midnight Friday, local time.

As reported on MP earlier this week, there have been some strong earthquakes associated with another point in the Bardarbunga complex which may explain a smaller initial eruption, being labeled as #Fissure eruptions:

Volcano Erupts In Papua New Guinea Spewing Ash & Rock
A volcano erupted on Friday in eastern Papua New Guinea, spewing rocks and ash into the air and forcing the evacuation of local communities, seismologists and reports said.

Mount Tavurvur, which destroyed the town of Rabaul when it erupted simultaneously with nearby Mount Vulcan in 1994, rumbled to life early in the morning on the tip of the island of New Britain.
"The eruption started slow and slowly developed in a Strombolian (low level) eruption with incandescent projections accompanied by explosion noises and ongoing loud roaring and rumbling noises," the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory said.

Iceland Eruption near volcano triggers red alert

The Icelandic Met Office has raised its aviation warning level near the Bardarbunga volcano to red after an eruption began overnight.

Scientists said a fissure eruption 1km (0.6 miles) long started in a lava field north of the Vatnajokull glacier.
Civil protection officials said Icelandic Air Traffic Control had closed the airspace above the eruption up to a height of 5,000ft (1,500m).
The volcano has been hit by several recent tremors.
The fissure eruption took place between Dyngjujokull Glacier and the Askja caldera, a statement from the Department of Civil Protection said.
The area is part of the Bardabunga system.
"Scientists who have been at work close to the eruption monitor the event at a safe distance," the statement added.
"The Icelandic Met Office has raised the aviation colour code over the eruption site to red."
It added that no volcanic ash had so far been detected but a coast guard aircraft was due to take off later to survey the site.
Cauldrons
Until now the Met Office has kept its aviation warning level - indicating the potential threat of volcanic activity to air travel - at orange, its second-highest.
On Thursday, scientists said they were examining several "cauldrons" found near Bardarbunga volcano that could potentially be a sign of an eruption.
The cauldrons, depressions in the volcano's surface, each between 10-15m (49 ft) deep and 1km (0.6 miles) wide, were seen during a flight on Wednesday.
Bardarbunga is part of a large volcano system hidden beneath the 500m-thick (1,600ft) Vatnajokull ice cap in central Iceland.
Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing ash that disrupted air travel across Europe.

The Bardarbunga volcano erupted Friday in Iceland, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Scientists who are in the area close to the eruption estimate that the volcanic fissure in Holuhraun is about 1 km (0.62 miles) long, according to the Iceland Civil Protection Department.
No volcanic ash had been detected with the radar system in the area, officials said.

If there is a large eruption, it may seriously impact international travel, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Alan Reppert said.
"With the remains of Cristobal pushing over Iceland late in the weekend and early next week, there is a chance the winds above the volcano could push ash and debris south over the central and even western Atlantic," Reppert said. "Depending on how the storm dissolves, this may bring an even stronger push of winds southward into the Atlantic over the end of the week."

A Code Red aviation travel warning with a no-fly zone was issued Friday by the Met Office. The office said a significant emission of ash into the atmosphere was likely. Akureyri airport is no longer under restrictions and the height of the zone now only reaches 5,000 feet.

Ice crevasses formed Wednesday in advance of Friday's eruption, officials from the Met Office, the Institute of Earth Sciences and Civil Protection said. The crevasses or cauldrons were likely formed due to melting at the ice bottom.
A magnitude-5.0 earthquake was reported at 8:13 a.m. local time in the Bardarbunga area, Civil Protection and the United States Geological Survey reported.

A volcano also erupted Friday in Papua New Guinea, causing evacuations and a disruption for international flights in the region, The Associated Press reported.
