Have a case of the Mondays? Dreading
another work week? Does life seem futile? Don’t worry, we’re here to remind you that we live in the future, where science fiction has become science fact, and the cars of our dreams. I’ve got the perfect video to kick this new series off.
Let’s get the week started with an amazing fan-made video for Tesla
Motors entitled Hope. Cobbled together with footage from Wired, Aerial Mob, and #Tesla itself, this fan-made commercial is an inspiring homage to Tesla’s unlikely success story. If you watch this and don’t feel inspired to greatness, you’d better check your pulse. So far, this is my favorite fan-made commercial though you should check out the other candidates for yourself.
For those still reading (why?), the abbreviated speech is pulled from
the end of Charlie Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator.” It’s an incredible
feat of cinema from 1940 with a universal message that still resonates today. If you’ve made it this far, and you haven’t seen this timeless classic, do yourself a favor and watch it.
After you watch this fan video, that is.

Yellowstone Update: USGS installing new monitors as Idaho Quake Swarm has Pros stressing Preparedness - Update | Reuters/dutchsinse
Breaking: 16.04.2014 (Updated 23.04.2014)
USGS Installs seismometers amid recent Idaho Earthquake Swarm.
Forget about all the Bison, Gerbils, Squirrels and Hippies "Running for their Lives" from the Yellowstone "precursor" tremors. Most of that is hype or overplayed..
When the scientists are moving this fast, there might be more that is not being reported.

With Hundreds of earthquakes swarming central Idaho since last month, Idaho's Mount Borah area near Challis has seen the worst of it.
So far..
The recent earthquake swarm, beginning on March 24 and climaxed by a 4.9 magnitude tremor on Saturday, has produced no reports of injuries or severe damage but has rattled nerves in a region where Idaho's most powerful known quake, measured at M6.9, killed two children in 1983.
Saturday's earthquake was the strongest recorded in the state since 2005
and was followed on Monday by a M4.4 event that struck 10
miles north of the small ranching community of Challis, Idaho, according
to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Challis tremor knocked pictures and
animal mounts from walls, rattled dishes off tables and was felt by
residents in neighboring Montana more than 100 miles from the quake's
epicenter, officials said. The latest seismic surge, including 100 small
to moderate quakes on Monday alone, has galvanized government
scientists, who planned to install special seismometers in the area as
early as Tuesday to more closely track the activity.
"The likelihood of a severe earthquake coming on the heels of the recent swarm is low, but much is perplexing about the series of tremors," said Bill Phillips, a geologist with the Idaho Geological Survey at the University of Idaho. "Such earthquake swarms typically are associated with the movement of molten rock below ground, which geologists credited for the recent quake cluster at Yellowstone National Park, or they are linked to an active fault", he said on Tuesday. "What has many of us scratching our heads is the present-day swarm doesn't appear to be on the big, active fault in the area that ruptured in 1983 and caused the largest earthquake in Idaho," Phillips said. He was referring to the M6.9 that struck Mount Borah, Idaho's tallest peak, killing two children in Challis and damaging hundreds of homes and businesses. Idaho sits at the center of a seismic belt in the inter mountain West that runs from northwestern Montana to southern Nevada and contains thousands of faults in the Earth's crust, said Michael Stickney, director of earthquake studies at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. Carl Alexander, disaster coordinator in Challis, said schools have stepped up earthquake drills, and he has requested that emergency responders in Idaho and Utah be available if disaster strikes. Alexander is advising local residents to keep bottled water and canned goods on hand just in case "a big shaker" should strike.- RSOE/Reuters

Blood Moon 2014: Lunar Eclipse Viewing Guide - History/Webcast/tetrad | NASA/CCSSC
Blood Moon 2014:
3:06 AM Eastern 12:06 AM Pacific 15.04.2014
With all the hype out there about this being a sign or something bigger, really it is just the first Lunar Eclipse of 2014.
It is Forecasted to be more of a "Dark Orange" Moon, #BloodMoon refers to the color of the Moon when light is refracted around aerosols in the atmosphere.
The April 15th eclipse begins at 2 AM Eastern time when the edge of the Moon first enters the amber core of Earth’s shadow. Totality occurs during a 78 minute interval beginning around 3 o’clock in the morning on the east coast, midnight on the west coast. Weather permitting, the red Moon will be easy to see across the entirety of North America.
"For people in the United States, an extraordinary series of lunar eclipses is about to begin.
The action starts on April 15th when the full Moon passes through the amber shadow of Earth, producing a midnight eclipse visible across North America. So begins a lunar eclipse tetrad — a series of 4 consecutive total eclipses occurring at approximately six month intervals. The total eclipse of April 15, 2014, will be followed by another on Oct. 8, 2014, and another on April 4, 2015, and another on Sept. 28 2015.
"The most unique thing about the 2014-2015 #tetrad is that all of them are visible for all or parts of the USA," says longtime NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak.
On April 15th there will be a total eclipse of the Moon. Got clouds? No problem. The event will be broadcast live on the web by the Coca-Cola Science Center. |
LUNAR ECLIPSE, TUESDAY MORNING: The
mainstream media is abuzz with reports of a "blood moon" on Tuesday
morning. The scientific term is "lunar eclipse." On April 15th at 6
minutes past midnight Pacific Time (3:06 a.m Eastern Time), the Moon
will enter the sunset-colored colored shadow of Earth, producing a total
eclipse of the Moon:
The color of Earth's shadow,
and thus the color of the eclipsed Moon, depends substantially on the
amount of volcanic ash and other aerosols floating in the stratosphere.
According to atmospheric sciences professor Richard Keen of the
University of Colorado, the stratosphere is clear. This means the eclipse will be not "blood red," but rather bright orange.
See for yourself. The event will be visible from Australia, New Zealand, and all of the Americas: visibility map.
It's so bright, even observers in light-polluted cities will have no
trouble enjoying the show.
Got clouds? No problem. The event will be broadcast live on the web by the Coca-Cola Science Center at Columbus State University in Georgia.

The security vulnerability has implications for users across the Web. Here's what the bug means for you.
The Heartbleed bug, a newly discovered security vulnerability that puts users' passwords at many popular Web sites at risk, has upended the Web since it was disclosed earlier this week. It's an extremely serious issue, and as such, there's a lot of confusion about the bug and its implications as you use the Internet. Codenomicon/CNET |
CNET has compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions to help users learn more about the bug and protect themselves. The Heartbleed situation is ongoing, and we'll update this FAQ as new issues arise. Check back for new information.
What is Heartbleed?
Heartbleedis a security vulnerability in OpenSSL software that lets a hacker
access the memory of data servers. According to Netcraft, an Internet
research firm, 500,000 Web sites could be affected. That means a user's
sensitive personal data -- including usernames, passwords, and credit
card information -- is potentially at risk of being intercepted.

WIPP Update: 'Continuous release of radioactive material' - Nuclear Waste Expert | AP/currentargus.com
RADWatch
#WIPPUpdate:
07.04.2014
"The DOE itself hasn’t said when, or if,
WIPP will reopen. The fact is that we don’t know [...] what caused the
release, how to stop it, if underground can be decontaminated, how to
decontaminate surface, how to deal with worker health problems — None of
those are known [...] There is no instance in the world where you have
an underground salt mine significantly contaminated with radiation [...]
there is no experience in dealing with this situation. So we’re
starting from square one. It will be difficult, if not impossible, and
also very costly to cleanup the underground. Based on my 38 years in
working with the Department of Energy, I find it virtually inconceivable
— I hope they will decide if they can’t do total cleanup of the
underground, I hope they will decide not to reopen it. […] We need
independent analysis, independent medical people, and independent
technical folks to look at what happened and why it happened and what
kind of decontamination could be done, if any." - Don Hancock, Dir Nuclear Waste Safety Program
