Another Asteroid '2013 ET' To Pass Earth Saturday; When And Where To Watch It Live

Well Folks,

We have another decent sized rock coming our way on Saturday.

The Asteroid dubbed NEO (near-Earth object) 2013 ET was discovered on March 3, 2013, by the Catalina Sky Survey.

The Asteroid is estimated to be approximately 64-140 meters (210-460 feet) wide and will pass 2.5 times the Moon's distance from our planet. At its maximum brightness on March 9th, NEO 2013 ET will be at a relatively dim magnitude of 17 -- not bright enough to view through a backyard telescope, but should be reasonably bright through Slooh telescopes in the Canary Islands, off the coast of west Africa.

At a distance of 600,000 miles (960,000 kilometers) this Fly-By is 2.5LD (2.5X the distance of moon from Earth). The distance to moon’s orbit from the Earth differs between 363,104 to 406,696 kilometers (225,622 and 252,088 miles).

Near Earth Asteroids:

Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) are space rocks larger than approximately 100m that can come closer to Earth than 0.05 AU. None of the known PHAs is on a collision course with our planet, although astronomers are finding new ones all the time.

On March 8, 2013 there were 1382 potentially hazardous asteroids.

A newly discovered asteroid with a size of a football field will zoom past Earth Mar. 9 just days after another cosmic rock cruised past Earth at a distance less than moon’s orbit.

The Catalina Sky Survey discovered asteroid 2013 ET with an estimated size of 100 meters, Mar. 3. The giant rock will pass Earth Saturday at a distance of 600,000 miles (960,000 kilometers) that is 2.5 times the distance of moon from Earth. The distance to moon’s orbit from the Earth differs between 363,104 to 406,696 kilometers (225,622 and 252,088 miles).

Previously, asteroid 2013 EC with a diameter of 10 meters had zipped through the Earth’s neighborhood Mar. 4 at a distance of 230,000 miles, which is a little closer than the moon’s distance from Earth.

Asteroid 2013ET when it passes Earth will be in an orbit too far away for the stargazers to spot with naked eye, but the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy, run by astrophysicist Gianluca Masi will webcast a live stream of the asteroid’s flyby from its Virtual Telescope robotic facility, as reported by Space.com.

The free live webcast would begin at 2 p.m. EST Mar. 8 (Friday) (19:00 GMT) and can be accessed at: http://www.astrowebtv.org.

The closest approach of asteroid 2013 ET will also be webcast live on Slooh - a Space Camera Broadcast Channel, starting at 12:15 p.m. PST (3:15 p.m. EST or 20:15 p.m. UTC). The free-to-public webcast can be viewed here: http://events.slooh.com/.

Like the asteroid 2013 EC, there is no potential danger from asteroid 2013 ET to Earth.

NASA scientists have made headway in mapping 95 percent of the giant cosmic objects that pass near Earth’s orbit and that could destroy parts of Earth if they hit the atmosphere. Researchers have confirmed that none of these identified objects would cruise close enough to cause damage in near future.

However, scientists are less sure about smaller objects as only 30 percent of such rocks have been detected so far. A meteor with a mass of 10,000 tons that streaked into the atmosphere and exploded over the Ural Mountains in central Russia Feb.15 injuring over 1000 people, was a surprise visitor.

City-block sized asteroid to make close flyby of Earth on Saturday

An asteroid the size of a city block, will make its closest approach to Earth on Saturday, March 9th, less than 7 days after it was discovered, it has been revealed.

The asteroid dubbed NEO (near-Earth object) 2013 ET was discovered on March 3, 2013, by the Catalina Sky Survey.
The asteroid is estimated to be approximately 64-140 meters (210-460 feet) wide and will pass 2.5 times the Moon's distance from our planet. At its maximum brightness on March 9th, NEO 2013 ET will be at a relatively dim magnitude of 17 -- not bright enough to view through a backyard telescope, but should be reasonably bright through Slooh telescopes in the Canary Islands, off the coast of west Africa.

The asteroid will be travelling across the sky with a relative velocity of 11.88 kilometers per second or 26,552 mph, which is about 15 times faster than a rifle bullet. If asteroid 2013 ET were to hit Earth, the damage would be significant -- potentially destroying a small city.

Slooh Space Camera will cover its closest approach on Saturday, live on Slooh.com, free to the public, starting at 12:15 p.m. PST / 3:15 p.m. EST / 20:15 UTC -- accompanied by real-time discussions with Slooh president Patrick Paolucci, Slooh engineer Paul Cox, and documentary filmmaker Duncan Copp.
Viewers can watch live on their PC/MAC or iOS/Android mobile device.

"We only have a short viewing window of an hour or so from our Canary Islands observatory on March 9th, but we wanted to give the general public a front row seat to witness this new asteroid in real time as it passes by Earth," said Slooh president Patrick Paolucci.
