Jeremy Bush, 35, tried to save his brother, Jeff, when the earth
opened up and swallowed him Thursday night. On Sunday morning, Bush and relatives prayed with a pastor as the home — where he lived with his girlfriend, Rachel Wicker; their daughter, Hannah, 2; and others — was demolished and waited for firefighters to salvage anything possible from inside.
Early Sunday morning, just before the demolition began, Bush and an unidentified woman knelt and prayed at the mailbox in front of the home, owned by Leland Wicker, Rachel’s grandfather, since the 1970s.
After praying, Bush and the woman walked across the street to a neighbor’s lawn to watch the demolition.
The operator of the heavy equipment worked gingerly, first taking off a front wall. Family belongings were scooped onto the lawn gently in hopes of salvaging parts of the family’s 40-year history in the home.
As of Sunday afternoon — when demolition had stopped for the day and only a few walls of the home remained — a Bible, family photos, a jewelry box and a pink teddy bear for Hannah were among the items saved. Firefighters also were able to pick out the purse of one of the women in the home.
Cheers went up from family, friends and neighbors each time something valuable was salvaged.
Wanda Carter, the daughter of Leland Wicker, cradled the large family Bible in her arms. She said her mother and father had stored baptism certificates, cards and photos between the pages of that Bible over the years.
“It means that God is still in control, and He knew we needed this for closure,” she said, crying.
Carter said she spent from age 11 to 20 in the home, and she had to close her eyes as the home was knocked down.
“Thank you for all of the memories and life it gave us,” she said.
The Rev. John Martin Bell of Shoals Baptist Church said he had been with the family all morning. “We just prayed with them,” he said. He added that all five who lived in the house — Bush, Wicker, Hannah and two others ages 50 and 45 — were in need of support and prayers from the community.

A man swallowed by sinkhole under his bedroom in Florida is believed dead, authorities said early Friday, after monitoring equipment found no signs of life.
The 37-year-old "is presumed dead" after the incident Thursday night, according to Jessica Damico, a spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County Fire Department.
"It's not confirmed, but I think it's safe to presume," she said.
Engineers used monitoring equipment to search for signs of life without success. Some of the equipment went missing in the process.
"There is no evidence of him being alive," she said.
The victim cried out to his brother for help as the hole that opened up under his bedroom in Brandon, a suburb of Tampa. The brother tried frantically to pull him out.
Rescuers had to take the brother away from the edge of the chasm as it continued to grow, with the lost man nowhere in sight.
Using radar, engineers determined the sinkhole is about 100 feet in diameter, but it is not visible above ground except from inside the house.
The ground covering the massive cavity is mostly intact, but it could buckle, taking the entire house down with it -- as well as neighboring homes.
Authorities have evacuated the neighborhood.
The hole occurred naturally, Damico said, and is still actively developing. It is not man-made.
The bedroom is on top of the hole's center. Engineers will return with more sophisticated monitoring equipment after daybreak to get a better idea of its dimensions. They believe it could be 50 feet deep.
Authorities were unable to contact the victim as the sinkhole expanded, and the house was deemed unsafe for rescuers. The local fire marshal has condemned it, Damico said.
Five adults and one 2-year-old child were inside the home when chasm opened up, she said.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that's especially true when it comes to that big sinkhole that has swallowed a chunk of one town. We're going to take you live to the scene for an update in just a moment. But first, we have a sinking suspicion...

VIEIRA: ...you may want to know what causes these things.
For the last few days, we've watched these frightening images as a giant sinkhole at least 700 feet in diameter and more than 100 feet deep and growing has been swallowing everything in this Texas town's path. But could sinkholes like these be lurking under your town, even your house?
Mr. RANDALL ORNDORFF (U.S. Geological Survey): About 25 to 30 percent of the United States is underlain by rocks that can dissolve like limestone, gypsum and salt, and these areas are characterized by caves and also a lot of times by sinkholes.
VIEIRA: Randall Orndorff studies sinkholes at the U.S. Geological Survey.
Mr. ORNDORFF: Generally, you have holes in the bedrock below and then you have the soil above, and then the soil actually gets flushed down the hole that's in the bedrock.
VIEIRA: The culprit behind the soil drainage? Water. Both too much and too little.
Mr. ORNDORFF: The soil that's still above tends to collapse either when it gets too wet--so naturally, it occurs during times of high precipitation, the weight of the rainwater and the precipitation on the soil will form the collapse--and other times during drought. As the soil dries and you lose the cohesion of the moisture in the ground, that will also cause collapse of sinkholes.
VIEIRA: So can we predict where a sinkhole may strike next?
Mr. ORNDORFF: It's very difficult to know what's actually underground, where those voids are. We don't have a way to actually look underground right now to see where these might be.
VIEIRA: But there are some warning signs.
Mr. ORNDORFF: If you're living in a sinkhole-prone area, it's a good idea just to really look out, look for things: cracks in your foundation, movement of sidewalks and driveways, the formation of small holes in the yard. In most cases, you--geotechnical engineers may be able to look at situation and see if the--how large the void may be as it's starting. And there are situations where you--where people have been able to save their homes and other things by engineering.
VIEIRA: And NBC's Don Teague joins us live from the sinkhole near the Texas/Louisiana border.
Don, good morning to you. And what is the latest there?
DON TEAGUE reporting:
Well, Meredith, I can tell you we're about 100 feet from the edge of this sinkhole, which is plenty close for me. Authorities actually wanted us to be something like a quarter of a mile away, because the fear is this thing will continue growing. I can give you a look at it here over my shoulder. The good news is the growth of this thing has slowed down dramatically overnight. A little bit of sloughing off of some of the edges, but the dramatic falls that we saw yesterday have for the most part come to an end. And no homes have been taken by this thing. Everyone here hopeful that we've seen about as much of this as we're going to. But of course, geologists say it's possible for this thing to continue to grow for several weeks, if not months to come, to possibly even double in size. But again, the good news, no homes, and for now most of the growth of the sinkhole is heading off toward the woods, away from the populated area here. Meredith:
VIEIRA: Yeah. Don, do they know what caused this? I understand there's some oil drilling around the area and that might have somehow caused the erosion or compromised the earth.
TEAGUE: Sure. That's the big question, is exactly what did cause it. The best theory going right now is that oil drilling. This area is on top of a huge salt dome. It's about four miles in diameter. A lot of oil under there. They've been drilling here for 90 years. This was a real boomtown. Best guess is that storage water, which is a byproduct--a waste product, if you will, of that drilling, which was stored underground here caused that salt to erode and open up this hole.

Anatomy of a Sinkhole
To
follow up from the post below, I went a step further to discover more
about these mysterious holes that are found around the world. Through a
short research stint, I've found these holes are called sinkhole, also
known as a sink, shake hole, swallow hole, swallet, doline or cenote,
these are a natural depression or hole in the surface topography caused
by the removal of soil or bedrock, often both, by water. Sinkholes may
vary in size from less than a meter to several hundred meters both in
diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to
bedrock-edged chasms. They may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are
found worldwide. These terms are often used interchangeably though many
will distinguish between those features into which a surface stream
flows and those which have no such input. Only the former would be
described as sinks, swallow holes or swallets.Sinkholes have also been used for centuries as disposal sites for various forms of waste. A consequence of this is the pollution of groundwater resources, with serious health implications in such areas. In contrast, the Maya civilization sometimes used sinkholes in the Yucatán Peninsula (known as cenotes) as places to deposit precious items and sacrifices.
Thoughts: Through examining the forming of sinkholes, I now have a better understanding of why and how it is former. It is also amazing to know that these holes have put into use by as disposal sites or even act as kind of a 'safe' in the Maya civilization. However, with more human-induced into the environment, we are actually creating these to endanger ourselves. Cities could well be disappearing because of the dangers of sinkholes.

Residents of second home allowed to enter to retrieve personal items for 30 minutes only.
