Snowstorms, Severe Weather: Active Week Ahead

Active Jet Stream Pattern
Severe Storms Brewing
Significant snowfall, rain and thunderstorms are all expected as an active jet stream propels two -- and more likely, three -- storm systems across the country.
We'll start with the early week system already in progress, which will be followed immediately by a major named storm, and then another significant storm early next week.
Early Week: Northern Blizzard, Southern Severe

Parts of Interstate 29 in northeast North Dakota and Interstate 94 in northwest Minnesota were closed on Monday due to whiteout conditions and accidents. Snow will spread into northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan Monday night.
Meanwhile, thunderstorms, some severe, began firing across eastern parts of Oklahoma and Texas on Monday afternoon, and these will spread east through Monday night with the primary threats being damaging winds and large hail. However, a small number of tornadoes will be a possibility.

The cold front will head east on Tuesday, bringing the potential of rainfall from New York City and Washington, D.C. to Atlanta and Tallahassee.
With just enough cold air in place, snow will be possible across interior portions of the Northeast and into New England. In addition, colder air wrapping in behind the low-pressure system will bring some snow, including lake-enhanced snow, to parts of the Great Lakes.
The colder air will be particularly biting in the Upper Midwest, where some places may suffer through subzero highs on Tuesday. There will also be extremely dangerous wind chills Monday night and Tuesday morning, especially in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota where it will feel like 30 below to 45 below zero Tuesday morning.
As that system pushes out to sea by Wednesday, we turn our attention to a pair of major storm systems down the road.

Winter Storm Magnus will continue to manufacture snow in parts of the
Upper Midwest. Here's what you need to know Wednesday afternoon and
evening:
- Snow ends: Eastern Iowa, northern Missouri, most of southern Wisconsin
- Snow continues/develops: Central/northeast Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northern Indiana, northern Michigan
- Total snow accumulation: See our latest forecast map
- Wind: Strong west to northwest winds will persist over the western Great Lakes, eastern Iowa and northern Missouri. Reduced visibilities are likely in Upper Michigan, western and northern Lower Michigan, and eastern Wisconsin.
- Cities affected: Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Marquette

- Snow: Northern Missouri, central/eastern Iowa, southern/central/northeast Wisconsin, U.P. of Michigan.
- Heaviest snow: Iowa to central Wisconsin, with some lake-enhancement off Lake Superior into the U.P. of Michigan.
- Wind: Strong northwest winds from eastern Nebraska into Iowa, northeast Kansas, northern Missouri. Strong north winds off Lake Superior. Some blowing snow/reduced visibilities expected.
