I tried some of these and can say well... they're pretty good, easy, and handy especially if you're on the move.

My preference is boiling and after about 10 minutes it's done. In water the tray cooks evenly and returns nice and HOT. You can throw several in a big pot of water which is more than a microwave can handle. The whole family can enjoy these in 10 minutes.

Some go well with rye bread.

The plastic covering isn't easily pulled back. Trays labeled with an indelible marker will make them easy to identify after they go into the pot.

I think the OP has a point. The dinners are relatively inexpensive, some have a decent taste. Another key is that they have a shelf life of over a year (stated) but the packaging is so secure that they could last up to 7 years. They require no refrigeration or freezing nor water to reconstitute. However, you need access to a microwave (90 sec heat time) or you have to boil the packages - actually, I think you put it in boiling water and let simmer for 8-9 minutes.

Beans, rice, etc are great but they require lots of water to reconstitute and to cook and lots of energy to cook - especially the 'real' stuff not the Uncle Ben's stuff.

It is a good idea to stock up. If you are concerned with prions, avoid the the beef products.

Good idea OP. Those who stock only rice and beans will quickly find out it was a mistake. Gotta have some high fat foods to with that rice and beans.

In the near future people will kill for a couple of the Hormel meals

Hormel has been producing these ready-to-eat entrees for a number of years. They have just recently started using the brand names "Compleats" and "Chili Meats". Each entree can be eaten either hot or cold. For hot meals, you can warm the food up in its container either in the microwave or in boiling water.

Each entree averages between 200 and 300 calories. Some varieties do contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) so be sure to read the nutritional labels if you're sensitive to this. Shelf life for this product under normal condition can be up to 7 years based on International Packaging.
