BREAKING NEWS: AR 1520 Massive Solar Flare X-Class 1.4 CME - Earth Directed - 16:53 UT

X-FLARE! Big sunspot AR1520 unleashed an X1.4-class solar flare on July 12th at 1653 UT. Because the sunspot was directly facing Earth at the time of the blast, this is a geoeffective event. Over the last couple of years, the media has amped up their efforts to make preppers look crazy, and it seems like it may be working. In fact, we have covered a number of cases where prepping was actually used against individuals in court.

In the latest attack on the preparedness movement, the media is now claiming that the mother of the Connecticut killer was a “paranoid, gun-crazed survivalist” and is theorizing that here “crazy” lifestyle could have been responsible for her son’s killing spree.

In my opinion, preppers need to take this very seriously. It seems like some people are trying to use this tragedy to demonize Preppers, gun owners and anyone who is self reliant. They are yet again trying to make you look crazy and dangerous.
The Daily Mail Reports:

“The mother of the loner… may have played a major part in his catastrophic mental breakdown… Friends and family portrayed Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy as a paranoid ‘survivalist’ who believed the world was on the verge of violent, economic collapse.
Lanza’s aunt Marsha said Nancy was ‘self reliant’ and that they talked a lot about how she was preparing for the economic meltdown.

In one case, law enforcement was able to obtain a search warrant simply by stating a person was a Prepper. In another, a man was declared mentally defective and had his firearms seized by law enforcement officials.
With talk of new gun control legislation coming as a result of this tragedy, I wouldn’t be shocked if Preppers are somehow targeted in this new crackdown. We’ve been warning that peppers and survivalist would eventually become a target, and now I believe the media is using the tragedy in Connecticut to yet again makeP reppers look like the problem.

Sunspot AR 1515, Massive Eruption/Flare 4.7.2012

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory saw an active region on the sun, labeled AR1515, sent out an M5.3 class solar flare that peaked on Independence Day July 4th, 2012

INCOMING CME: On July 4th, sunspot AR1515 hurled at least four minor CMEs into space. Most flew south of the ecliptic plane (the orbital plane of the planets), on track to miss everything. One of them, however, appears to be heading toward Earth.

The explosion hurled a CME into space. According to this movie from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, the cloud appears to be heading south and away from Earth. However, we cannot yet rule out a glancing blow to our planet on July 8th or 9th. Stay tuned for further analysis.

X-FLARE: For days, giant sunspot AR1515 has looked capable of producing a really strong explosion. On July 6th it finally did. Yesterday, the sunspot's magnetic canopy erupted, producing a brief but potent X1.1-class solar flare. spaceweather.com

If One Storm Can Turn D.C. Dark For Several Days, What Would A Massive EMP Burst Do?

The “super derecho” storm that pounded the Washington D.C. area on Friday night with hurricane-force winds is being called unprecedented.  But the truth is that there are other events that could happen that would be far more damaging to our power grid.  For example, a substantial EMP burst over a major U.S. city would fry virtually all of the electronics in the city and take the power grid in the area down indefinitely.  A gigantic EMP burst over the entire country (caused by a massive solar storm or a very large nuclear explosion high in the atmosphere) could theoretically take down the entire national power grid.

Current thinking is that  the target will probably not be an individual city, but a central location over the continental USA, with the nuclear detonation occurring a couple hundred miles in altitude, at the edge of space.
