Your family's emergency kit is probably a disaster

By Kelly Wallace, CNN
August 27, 2013 -- Updated 1225 GMT (2025 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • New unconventional ad campaign encourages families to create an emergency plan
  • Six out of 10 Americans don't have a disaster plan, according to survey
  • Only 19% said they were very prepared for a disaster
  • One tag line for quirky campaign: Winging it is not an emergency plan
Editor's note: Kelly Wallace is CNN's digital correspondent and editor-at-large covering family, career and life. She's a mom of two girls and lives in Manhattan. Read her other columns and follow her reports at CNN Parents and on Twitter.

(CNN) -- My mother-in-law and I talk about nearly everything. But when I mentioned to her recently that I was working on a story about emergency preparedness, I realized that's one thing we've never discussed -- even though she lives nearby and would certainly factor into our family plan.
"If a disaster strikes, where would we meet?" we asked each other. "Who would we call? What would we take with us?"
A new national advertising campaign shared with CNN exclusively ahead of its official launch Wednesday aims to get families like my own at least talking about what we'd do in the face of a natural disaster or other emergency.
"This is a pretty fearful topic for a lot of parents," said Priscilla Natkins, executive vice president and director of client services for the Ad Council, the private nonprofit group spearheading the campaign along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"This is not something they want to think about or necessarily talk about with their kids," she said.
The Ad Council, which has produced many memorable PSA campaigns, ranging from Smokey Bear's warnings about forest fires to the "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk" series, conducted a national survey on emergency preparedness. The survey included 800 adults.

As Tepco pumps thousands of tons of water through the wrecked Fukushima station to cool the melted cores of three reactors, the tainted runoff was found to be leaking into groundwater and the ocean. The approach to cooling and scrapping the plant will need to change and include technologies developed outside Japan if the cleanup is to succeed, said Vladimir Asmolov, first deputy director general of Rosenergoatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear utility. [...]
After 29 months of trying to contain the radiation from Fukushima’s molten atomic cores, Tepco said last week it will reach out for international expertise [...]
“It was clear for a long time that Tepco was not adequately coping with the situation,” Asmolov said. [...]
The idea of pumping water for cooling was never going to be anything but a “machine for generating radioactive water,” Asmolov said. Other more complex methods, such as the use of special absorbents like thermoxide to clean contaminated water and the introduction of air cooling, should be used, he said. [...]

Empire Editorial: Is Fukushima tainting one of Alaska’s most valuable resources?
[...] Now, Japanese officials said, the situation is too big. They need international assistance. [...]
We are concerned this hazardous material is hitching a ride on marine life and making its way to Alaska. [...]
We are concerned our Alaska salmon are being slowly tainted with nuclear waste. We are worried about the impact this waste could have on our resources, and especially the people who consume them. [...]
It’s good news Japan is seeking help. And it’s good this issue is again making headlines.
We urge scientists in Alaska to be proactive about conducting research and monitoring our salmon species. And we urge them to be vocal about their findings. [...]

  • Ocean Currents: “The currents merge to form the North Pacific current and surge eastward. [...] Thousands of miles later, the currents hit an upwelling just off the western coast of the United States and split. One, the Alaska current, turns north up the coast toward British Columbia and Southeast Alaska. The other, the California current, turns south and heads down the western seaboard of the U.S.”
  • Migration: “Most often, it’s the chinook, coho and sockeye salmon migration patterns that range farthest. [...] each fish hitches a ride back to its home rivers and spawning grounds on the North Pacific current, the same one pulling the nuclear waste eastward.”
  • Ongoing Contamination: “[According to Ken Buesseler, scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution,] levels coming from the damaged nuclear plant are not decreasing. Instead, they are increasing.”
  • History: “The amount they’ve found so far does not pose a risk to humans or marine life, they’ve said. [...] But that’s what scientists said about Chernobyl before later finding they had gravely

Experts have said they suspect that more contaminated water is seeping out from under the melted-down reactors into the groundwater and the Pacific. Elevated levels of radioactive cesium in surrounding waters seem to confirm those suspicions.
#Tepco has said those leaks are not directly from beneath the reactors, but from maintenance tunnels that run along the coast and remain contaminated from the early days of the disaster.
But it also acknowledges that the water beneath the reactors is extremely contaminated, and experts say that if it does get into the ocean, it will surpass even the leaks that occurred in the disaster’s early days. (Study: Up to 47 quadrillion becquerels of #cesium-137 released into Pacific from Fukushima)
“That prospect scares me,” Michio Aoyama, a senior scientist in the Oceanography and Geochemistry Research Department at the government-affiliated Meteorological Research Institute, said in an interview this month.
“It’s the ultimate, worst-case scenario,” Professor Aoyama said.

At the Very Least, Your Days of Eating Pacific Ocean Fish Are Over

RadiationOpinion by Gary Stamper

The heart-breaking news from #Fukushima just keeps getting worse…a LOT worse…it is, quite simply, an out-of-control flow of death and destruction. #TEPCO is finally admitting that radiation has been leaking to the Pacific Ocean all along. and it’s NOT over….
I find myself moving between the emotions of sorrow and anger.
It now appears that anywhere from 300 to possibly over 450 tons of contaminated water that contains radioactive iodone, cesium, and strontium-89 and 90, is flooding into the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima Daichi site everyday. To give you an idea of how bad that actually is, Japanese experts estimate Fukushima’s fallout at 20-30 times as high as as the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings in 1945
There’s a lot you’re not being told. Oh, the information is out there, but you have to dig pretty deep to find it, and you won’t find it on the corporate-owned evening news.
    • An MSNBC article in April of 2012 reported that seals and polar bears were found to have “external maladies” that consisted of fur loss and open sores, obvious signs of radiation burns from the Fukushima meltdown, despite the conclusions of the article.
    • Fukushima radiation appears to be causing an epidemic of dead and starving Sea Lions in California and the FDA has refused to test for radiation
    • Since the summer of 2011, U.S. scientists have observed several dozen living and dead Pacific Ocean marine mammals with a strangely similar condition of skin sores and hair loss. These animals may be suffering from ‘beta burns,’ which are caused by significant external exposure to ‘beta emitters’ such as radiostrontiums, which were released in copious quantities to the Pacific Ocean at Fukushima Daiichi in 2011
    • .Almost a third more US West Coast newborns may face thyroid problems after Fukushima nuclear disaster
    • Contaminated water from Fukushima reactors could double radioactivity levels of US coastal waters in 5 years — “We were surprised at how quickly the tracer spread”

WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE PACIFIC OCEAN FOOD CHAIN? – May 2013 – Researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine Earth Science and Technology reported in early 2012 that they have detected radioactive cesium from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in plankton collected from all 10 points in the Pacific they checked, with the highest levels at around 25 degrees north latitude and 150 degrees west longitude. Plankton, and the radiation they contain, moves right up the food chain through fish, whales, seals, etc., and when larger fish eat smaller fish. James Woolsey, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, is gearing up to pressure state legislatures to force utilities to protect equipment against an electromagnetic pulse, which could come from solar activity or be caused by small nuclear weapons exploded at low altitude, frying crucial components."

WASHINGTON — The electric grid, as government and private experts describe it, is the glass jaw of American industry. If an adversary lands a knockout blow, they fear, it could black out vast areas of the continent for weeks; interrupt supplies of water, gasoline, diesel fuel and fresh food; shut down communications; and create disruptions of a scale that was only hinted at by Hurricane Sandy and the attacks of Sept. 11.

Nuclear Expert: Xenon detections in S. Korea may be from Fukushima reactors — Criticality or ‘spontaneous fission of curium’ to blame?

Yonhap, Aug. 13, 2013: [...] According to the sources, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety detected traces of the colorless, odorless noble gas on three occasions in June. Xenon is detected in trace amounts after nuclear bomb tests or other nuclear activities. [...] The government could not determine the origin of the Xenon gas, one of the sources said, adding that the North may not be responsible because no signs of nuclear activities have been seen in the country at around that time. [...]
Wall St. Journal, August 13, 2013: [...] Lee Ho-ryung, a nuclear specialist at the Korea Institute of Defense Analyses in Seoul, told Korea Real Time that [...] the xenon traces didn’t necessarily originate from North Korea. They may have come from Japan, which is still struggling to recover from radiation leaks at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant [...]
Possible causes of Xenon releases

Wall St. Journal, Nov. 3, 2011: Nuclear fission by-products have been detected at one of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the government said Wednesday, raising the possibility that some parts of the melted core may still be active. [...] Xenon-133 has a short half-life of five days, and Xenon-135 just nine hours, an agency spokesman said. Any nuclear reaction would likely be taking place on a localized basis, the spokesman said. [...]
Asahi Shimbun, Nov. 3, 2011: [Tepco] said Nov. 3 that naturally occurring “spontaneous nuclear fission”–not a state of criticality–created the xenon detected at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. [...] Instead of being caused by self-sustaining nuclear fission, the xenon was likely generated by spontaneous fission of curium and other radioactive substances derived from the reactor fuel, TEPCO said. Solar Weather Alert: AR1817 M1.5 Flare - #CME Aug 12, 2013 - Solar Maximum (Video) | Solar Watcher/spaceweather.com

#SOLARMAXIMUM ALERT

#SOLARFLARES: After weeks of quiet, solar activity is picking up. New sunspot #AR1817 is crackling with C and M-class solar flares. An M1.5-class eruption on August 12th (1041 UT) created a wave of ionization in the upper atmosphere above Europe and might have hurled a coronal mass ejection #CME toward Earth.

BREAK IN THE QUIET: Solar activity has been low for weeks. The emergence of sunspots AR1817 and AR1818 could break the quiet. Both pose a threat for M-class solar flares. AR1817 has already produced one almost-M class eruption: Stay tuned for updates.

An Impulsive M-Class Solar Flare observed from active region 11817 in the southern hemisphere of the solar corona. Peaking to M1.5 at 10:40 UTC August 12th. This eruption was in an earth facing position so the resulting Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is earth directed. Early assessment of the CME indicates impact on earths magnetic field late August 15.

Biological Alert: First case of H7N9 #AvianFlu Human Transfer Confirmed| Medical News Today

H7N9 bird flu alarm raised by first report of human spread

This week the BMJpublishes the strongest evidence yet of probable person-to-person transmission of the new bird flu virus #H7N9 in a family cluster in Eastern China, where the virus first emerged earlier this year.

The event concerns a father who most likely contracted the virus from live birds, and his daughter, who likely caught it while caring for him in hospital.
However, the Chinese scientific and public health team that investigated the case conclude that since no outbreak occurred, the ability of H7N9 to transmit itself is "limited and non-sustainable".
The emerging #avianinfluenza A (H7N9) virus was recently identified in Eastern China. Reports up to the end of June 2013 show 133 have so far been infected, resulting in 43 deaths.
Although there is currently no evidence of sustained spread of H7N9 among humans, some experts believe it is just a matter of time before the virus acquires the ability to do so.
A study led by a world expert in avian flu that was published inNature last month suggests thatH7N9 viruses have global threat potential.
So far, most reported cases appear to be of people who have visited live poultry markets, or who were in close contact with live birds in the days leading up to their illness.
